I'm sure there are collectors with nerves of steel, who simply never get drawn into a risky listing because it seems like such a deal.
After 30 years of collecting, I still can't say that for myself. This raw, high-grade copy of Fantastic Four #5 on eBay had so many standard red flags, such as "why didn't the seller get it graded for sale?", but it wasn't suspiciously cheap, many others were bidding, the top-rated seller was forthcoming with info and extra photos, and I was over-confident in my collector's eye.
Fortunately, I still had the good sense to reach out to Comicpresser. They not only told me they would steer clear, but sent me photos with callouts of the signs of restoration I'd missed.
The fee was negligible in comparison to the disaster averted, and I came away with knowledge I can use in the future to be more discerning. Priceless!
